Earth Day poster contest asks students to focus on water pollution – The Mercury News

The Campbell-based West Valley Clean Water Authority, along with several other local agencies, is hosting an Earth Day poster design challenge, open to all K-12 students in Santa Clara County.

Students are asked to submit designs for the Watershed Watch program, which aims to prevent pollution in the region’s stormwater systems. Designs should reflect the students’ vision for clean waterways in Santa Clara Valley.

First- and second-place winners in three age categories will win $250 and $150, respectively. The age categories are grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

Students’ designs should answer one of two questions: why local waterways are important to them, or how they can prevent water pollution. Entries will be judged by Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program members on the criteria of originality, clarity and expression of theme. The program is an association of 13 cities and towns in Santa Clara County and the Santa Clara Valley Water District.

The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on Earth Day, April 22. Winners will be announced in May and have their art posted publicly to promote stormwater pollution prevention and local waterway stewardship.
