BHOPAL: Flood-hit residents of Sheopur continue to struggle for clean drinking water, food and shelter. Four days after the dreaded flooding the city looks like a garbage dumping ground. A massive operation is on to clean the roads to remove the silt.
Over a lakh population of Sheopur has been affected after the flood water from river Seep entered the city submerging almost half of the town. Water is supplied through a network of tube wells in Sheopur and majority of them are throwing out muddy water.
Large number of people have been camping in relief camps started in schools and hostels. Besides, the food grains stored in private godowns and shops, thousands of quintals of grains stored in the government’s silo in Sheopur have also been damaged.A mobile transformer of the local body is moving from one spot to another connecting the tube wells which are still giving pure water to supply the precious commodity.
“People are forced to use the rainwater collected in drums and buckets for bathing, toilet and washing use,” said Jay Singh Jadon of the Gandhi Sevashram. As people face acute water crisis, they have started collecting rainwater. But drinking water continued to be a huge issue, residents said. Food is being distributed by the social workers and local businessmen.
Asad Qazi said that,” We have brought food from the neighbouring Bara city of Rajasthan which is still accessible-.”Divisional commissioner Ashish Saxena said, “things have been lined up and by August 9, power in the entire district will be restored by August 9. It is likely to be restored in the city by Friday evening. Power is linked with roads which are being cleared to make way for relief work. Funds have been transferred to the municipality.” He said that,” saving people’ life was the first task, the damage to the government property will be assessed later.”
