Mexico is experiencing a dangerous drought as drink companies continue to use billions of liters of water. The drought in Northern Mexico is so bad that taps are dry in the city of Monterrey. Pipas, or water delivery trucks, are the only way for the community to get water. As many people can’t afford water bottles, the public is growing increasingly angry at companies like Coca-Cola and Heineken that are taking billions of liters of water from public reservoirs, according to a Guardian piece.

Monterrey has a population of 5.3 million people who have had no running water in their homes for months. Trucks that carry drinking water sometimes deliver water that is brown or has insects in it, according to the Guardian.
Many brewers and soft drink companies have factories in the city, and they are responsible for taking nearly 90 billion liters of water a year. 50 billion liters of this comes from public reservoirs.
Vega Morales, a resident, and mother in Monterrey, told the Guardian that she has two 20-liter buckets to fill daily and uses most of it is used in the bathroom.
“I don’t want to get to the point where we can’t flush the toilets. That’s where I would start to feel really gross,” she says. “The kids don’t understand – it is hardest on them.”
The price of drinking water has tripled in the last two months, making it even harder for most of the public to get drinking water. Those who cannot afford drinking water are forced to drink the unclean drinking water from the pipas.
Several cities have completely run out of water supplies as Mexico faces the worst water crisis in 30 years. Water reservoirs, which usually serve 23 million people, have dried up, but companies continue to steal water.

Companies like Coca-Cola and Heineken use private wells to extract groundwater to continue to produce their products. Just a few weeks ago, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked drink companies to stop production and give their water to the public. Heineken agreed to give 20 percent of its supply for public use, while Coca-Cola invited the public to collect free water from its Topo-Chico factory, but this is too far for most residents.
The solutions that these companies are giving to the public are not good enough. They are stealing water from these communities, and this is a matter of public health. Everyone should have a right to clean drinking water.
Cities all over the world, from California to Vietnam, are facing droughts and climate crises. Millions of people are protesting all over the world. Climate change is one of the things that leads to extreme weather like droughts, floods, and fires.
The single BEST thing you can do to save water, besides demanding these companies do not steal water, is to stop eating meat and all animal products. Growing animals for livestock takes a massive amount of water. It takes nearly 660 gallons of water to just make one burger, which is equivalent to nearly two months of showering for the average person. On the other hand, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to make just one gallon of cow milk.
Studies have shown that eating more plant-based can add over a decade to your lifespan, it can save the world’s forests, it benefits the environment, and it is significantly better for your health! Nations around the world have urged people to eat more plant-based to curb climate change.
