Poha Makers: Poha Makers Cut Output By 25% Due To Water Shortage | Indore News

Indore: Dropping groundwater level and alternate day water supply system in Ujjain, a hub for poha manufacturing industries, has hit poha production with most units cutting down output by 20-25 per cent amid increased dependency on tanker water supply. An average 5,000-6,000 litre of tanker water is used in a week at a single poha manufacturing industry, claimed industry players.Ujjain has around 40 poha mills and total estimated production is close to 180-200 tonne of poha everyday.Poha industry was anticipating a jump in production capacity to about 230-250 tonne a day in the new financial year though water shortage and reduced availability of workers due to the ongoing wedding season has dampened production capacities.Shailendra Rathi, owner of a poha manufacturing unit in Ujjain said, “My factory is shut since three days since there are no workers to operate the machines and water is in short supply. I have cut down my production by 25 per cent in the summer.”Most poha manufacturing industries in Ujjain have squeezed production and are expected to continue to run on lower capacities in the summer months amid short supply of water and labourer issues.A manager, Raghuveer Agrawar working at a poha unit said, “We order at least 5,000-6,000 litre of water through tankers in a week to meet operative requirements. With rising temperature, getting water will be a task and distribution charges also go up. Additional expenses increase the input cost and squeezes profit margins.”Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan are the major markets of Ujjain manufactured poha.Manufacturers said, high pricing of Ujjain poha in comparison to other centres due to high cost of logistics as paddy is sourced from Chhattisgarh and Gujarat and mandi tax levied by the MP govt has already dampened the sales of locally manufactured poha.
