Quinnesec water treated | News, Sports, Jobs

QUINNESEC — As a result of a water main break on Lincoln Avenue, a small amount of chlorine is being added to the Quinnesec water system, Breitung Township officials said Wednesday.

The action is under the direction of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and is a precautionary measure. Chlorination will continue for approximately two weeks as a disinfectant to the area where the water main break was located.

Once two consecutive bacteria samples are negative, the chlorination period will be complete.

Chlorination will not be higher than 4 parts per million, and optimally at 2 ppm. The water is still safe to drink and there is not a need for a boil advisory, officials said.

There are currently no positive samples for coliform bacteria. Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful bacteria may be present.
