The water bills the residents of San Benito pay monthly today are not the highest in the Rio Grande Valley.

According to a study prepared by the consulting company CAPEX, the rates are nearly in the middle when compared to most cities in the region. But such rates could change if the city council approves a hike that will impact consumers from the residential and commercial sectors.

The rate increase is being proposed so the city can meet its current and proposed water and sewer debt obligation of more than $17.2 million.

As to the debt service, of the payments made to satisfy a debt obligation, the city has a principal of more than $19.3 million – a figure that will be reduced to zero at the end of 12 years, or in FY 2045.

That is if all payments to the principal and interest are made.
