Water crisis due to booster pumps: OCW | Nagpur News

Nagpur: Orange City Water Limited (OCW) on Friday claimed that water scarcity in the city is due to rampant usage of tullu (booster) pumps across the city.
So far, 51 pumps have been seized, said an OCW statement.
Former water works committee chairman and ex-BJP corporator Vijay Zalke slammed OCWL. “If people are using tullu pumps then it means the city is facing water scarcity,” he told TOI.
Calling for action against the guilty, Zalke said, “Seizing 51 pumps in a city with a population of 35 lakh across 10 zones cannot be construed as the usage of pumps is leading to a water crisis,” Zalke said.
OCW cited many examples of tullu pumps causing low pressure water supply in many areas.
A resident of Manewada recently complained of inadequate water supply. “When the team of NMC-OCW from Hanuman Nagar zone went to find out the cause, they noticed that not only the complainant’s house, but the entire street was getting poor water supply. Low pressure water supply was due to illegal installation of tullu pumps in nearby Shiv Apartments,” claimed OCW.
OCW is receiving many complaints every day from the 10 zones. Subsequently, during their joint visits or raids, the team also came across people using booster pumps attached to the water pipeline.
Recently, the NMC carried out operations in Bhim Nagar, Parvati Nagar and Shiv Nagar under Hanuman Nagar zone, Ajni and Khamla under Laxmi Nagar zone, Dharampeth zone, Binaki under Satranjipura zone and various localities under Ashi Nagar zone and seized 51 tullu pumps.
Due to the soaring temperature, the consumption of water has increased because people have started using coolers. In some cases, people were found drawing more water through the illegal usage of tullu pumps, said OCW.
According to Zalke, the dissolution of the general body has exposed the civic machinery’s inability to handle the water crisis. “Earlier, corporators used to manage the water crisis by ensuring smooth water supply,” he claimed.
