Water Rationing: MCC Mulls Water Rationing in Mangaluru Due to Decreasing Water Levels at Thumbe Dam | Mangaluru News

Mangaluru: Mangaluru city is likely to face a potential drinking water crisis as the storage at Thumbe dam is gradually decreasing due to the lack of inflow in the Nethravati river. The water stored in the dam can last for approximately 40 days, but the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will soon need to consider implementing water supply rationing. The water in Thumbe dam, which provides water to Mangaluru city, Ullal, Mulki, and nearby villages, is decreasing because of insufficient inflow. As of Monday, the water level in the dam was at 4.5 meters with the maximum level being six meters. MCC commissioner Anand CL told TOI that the city corporation can sustain water supply until June 10 with the current water levels in the dam. The water level had slightly risen recently due to the water release from the AMR dam upstream. The commissioner also suggested that the city corporation is contemplating implementing water supply rationing in the city to prevent any shortage crisis until the start of the monsoon. “We have been working out plans to introduce rationing in the water supply. Water can be lifted from the dam in Thumbe until the water level reduces to two meters,” he said. The commissioner said there will be a 24-hour disruption in water supply in Mangaluru city starting from 6am on April 30. The water supply will be halted to allow for the installation of bulk meters in the city. “We had not installed bulk metres to the pipeline that supplies water to the city from Thumbe. The bulk meters assist the city corporation in determining the precise amount of water pumped at Thumbe vented dam and the distribution of water to different areas in the city. It will also help us in assessing any leakage in the pipeline,” he said. Anand said the MCC has prepared six pumps near the downstream of Thumbe dam. Water available on the downstream will be pumped back to Thumbe dam if water level decreases drastically, he said. Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP has already enforced a prohibition on utilizing water from AMR dam for industrial and agricultural activities.
