Water Scarcity: Over 6 Lakh Villagers Face Drinking Water Scarcity In Nashik Division | Nashik News

Nashik: Over 6.3 lakh people from Nashik, Ahmednagar, Dhule, Jalgaon, and Nandurbar districts of the Nashik division are facing severe drinking water crisis. These villagers are reliant on tankers for water supply.According to the reports from divisional headquarters, 6.3 lakh people from 1,973 villages are affected, while 521 tankers have been deployed to mitigate the drinking water scarcity.“Ahmednagar district is the worst hit, with 3.7 lakh villagers from 1,144 villages receiving water through 181 tankers. The administration has secured 69 wells to support the water distribution. In Pathardi taluka, 77 tankers are providing water to 1.4 lakh people in 423 villages. The Pathardi municipal council has also arranged a tanker to supply water to 26 colonies,” said an official from the divisional headquarters.“The scarcity is attributed to inadequate rainfall, which has reduced groundwater recharge and increased reliance on surface water. Consequently, the administration has prioritized drinking water, reducing irrigation water rotation through canals, impacting well water levels and escalating the rural demand for drinking water,” the official added.Since water cannot be supplied through canals to the villages, the tankers have been deployed. Some tankers cover almost 50 km distance to fetch water for the villages. In Nashik district, 1.32 lakh villagers in 763 villages are being provided water through 255 tankers, while 119 wells have been acquired. Yeola and Chandwad talukas are among the hardest hit, with 45 and 29 tankers deployed for 77 and 93 villages, respectively, with over 75,000 people relying on them. Nandgaon taluka, with 313 villages, has 64 tankers in service due to its sparse and widespread population.Chalisgaon taluka in Jalgaon district is also severely affected, with 30 villages and a population of 71,620 relying on 42 tankers. Overall, in Jalgaon, 78 tankers cater to the needs of 1.18 lakh people across 59 villages. Notably, Nandurbar district is yet to see tanker deployment. The administration’s efforts continue to address the water shortage and provide relief to the thirsty villages. The officials also said that the population affected due to the water scarcity will further swell towards May end and early June before the Monsoon arrives.“People have been advised to use water judiciously as the Monsoon could get delayed, leading to severe water scarcity,” the official added.
