Nkda: Nkda Focus On Boosting Supply Of Filtered Water | Kolkata News

Kolkata: At a time when areas in the New Town neighbourhood are steadily developing and witnessing a real-estate boom, New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has commissioned a study to formulate a policy for augmentation of filtered water supply anticipating an increase in demand for treated surface water. NKDA has sent a letter to the state public health engineering (PHE) department to conduct the study, and will also form an inter-departmental committee to conduct a study of its own.Officials said there is likely to be a higher demand for water in areas under NKDA and Hidco soon. Besides focusing on ways to increase water generation, the commissioned study will also focus on making the distribution process more efficient. “The study will help to formulate a plan on both short- and long-term measures required to boost treated water supply,” said NKDA chairman Alapan Bandyopadhyay. At present, the New Town water treatment plant has a generating capacity of 40 million gallons per day (MGD), out of which New Town receives about 24 MGD, officials said. Another 7.5 MGD was being supplied to Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. With the rapid development in its area, NKDA is expected to occasionally supply treated surface water to the neighbourhood, especially during summer. .Authorities said the plan was to ensure that future filtered water needs are met efficiently and equitably. “The study findings will help shape the water distribution system in the NKDA planning area,” said an official.
