Water Crisis: Water Crisis In Seaside Villages As Salinity Ingress Rises In K’pada | Bhubaneswar News

Kendrapada: With the advent of summer, a large number of seaside villages of Mahakalapada and Rajnagar blocks in Kendrapada district are facing water shortage as salinity ingress in many coastal pockets has been increasing.“Many villages were virtually floating on an ocean of sweet water three decades back. But due to excess drawing of groundwater, the salinity level in the water has been increasing year by year,” said Narayan Mandal, the former sarpanch of Kharinashi gram panchayat. In many parts of the coastal pockets, residents complained of shortage of drinking water due to non-functioning of many tubewells. “To mitigate drinking water scarcity, we will soon repair all the defunct tubewells across the district. The work of the first phase of the mega drinking water project has been completed. The project, which will provide drinking water to 305 villages of Rajnagar and Pattamundai blocks in the district, will be completed this year,” Basant Kumar Nayak, the executive engineer of rural water supply and sanitation, Kendrapada.Large numbers of women and children are forced to walk with pitchers for 1km to fetch water from the tubewells and wells in the villages of Kharinashi, Petachena, Suninti, Jamboo, Batighar, Tubi, Talachua, Rangani, Kansarabadadandua, Ajagarapatia, Magarakandha, Gupti, Sailendranagar and other coastal villages. “This summer, we will face a water crisis, as the only tubewell in the village became defunct two months ago,” said Nalini Mandal of Suniti village. Similarly, Jamboo residents will meet the same fate this summer as two tubewells have not been functioning for a long time. “Salinity is a major problem in these seaside villages for which many people get salty water from the tubewells,” alleged BJP leader and former MLA of Rajnagar, Alekha Jena.
