Water Shortage: AIADMK MLAs petition collector to address water shortage in city | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: A group of AIADMK MLAs from the district led by former minister S P Velumani met the district collector on Monday and submitted a petition demanding authorities streamline drinking water supply to tide over the water crisis.Speaking to reporters after submitting the petition, Velumani blamed state authorities for the scarcity. He said dams should have been desilted to increase their storage capacity. He also pointed out that the delay in completing the Pillur phase 3 project had aggravated the crisis.“There is extreme water scarcity. Though this situation persists across the state, it could have been prevented in Coimbatore district with proper planning,” the former minister said. “Siruvani, Pillur and Aliyar dams are the primary sources of drinking water to Coimbatore. These dams should have been desilted,” he said. Velumani claimed that water management was effective during the AIADMK rule. He said all water bodies were desilted through the ‘Kudimaramathu scheme,’ which led to an increase in storage capacity. TNN
